maceration

binomial name: maceration
similar to enfleurage, this method relies upon a gentle process to extract the active compounds of plants. the botanical materials are soaked in vegetable oil, water or another solvent until it dissolves. it is then heated and strained, creating more of an infused oil than an essential oil. it is most commonly used to create extracts and resins.

benefit: maceration does not actually produce essential oils, but “carrier oils”. these oils are usually a combination of the plant’s essential oils and vegetable oil, giving them a blend of therapeutic properties.
