a true botanical gem, blood oranges set themselves apart in the citrus family with their vibrant ruby color. this distinctive variety was first discovered and cultivated in sicily in the 15th century where it is still produced today. cold-pressed from the peel to create a dry, zesty scent balanced with a rich sweetness.
benefit: the crimson depths reveal a bountiful source of nutrients for the skin, with a higher level of antioxidants than any other variety of orange. the active phytochemical, anthocyanin, is responsible for the vivid color and also the most potent antioxidant. it acts as a kind of sunscreen, protecting cells from uv rays, suppressing inflammation and stabilizing the collagen in the skin. the aromatic oil is also considered the most antidepressant of the citrus oils.
